Burlington Sock Puppets News Release
Burlington, NC- The Burlington Royals fell to the Danville Braves on Saturday night, 9-2, at Burlington Athletic Stadium. The Royals could not solve David Filak, who held them to two hits and one run in six innings, earning his first win. Angel Baez takes his fifth loss, allowing five earned runs in five innings. Sunday will see the final meeting between these two teams this season.
In Danville's first at bat, with runners on the corners and two outs, Sam Munson dropped down a bunt. The ball rolled towards first base, and as Baez went to scoop it with his glove, to make the play, he overran it, allowing Brandon Drury to score from third. The Royals would counter in the home half of the inning. Lane Adams led off with a single, and then stole second. A sacrifice bunt moved the Oklahoma native to third base, before he scored on a groundout from Michael Antonio to tie the score at one.
The Braves would regain the lead in their next at bat with an RBI single from Kurt Flemming, and pull ahead in the third on a two-run homer from Brandon Drury. Entering the fifth inning, Danville held a 4-1 lead, and they would expand on their advantage. Munson's two-RBI single made it a five run spread. In the next inning, a three run home run from Chase Larson put the game out of reach. The Royals put up a run in the bottom of the eighth when Kenny Swab scored on a single from Justin Trapp, which cut the lead to seven, but that's as close as the home team would get.
Filak, who retired 13 straight batters at one point, earns his first win, going six innings, allowing one run on two hits with three strikeouts. In relief, Matt Suschak allowed a hit in an inning, while Wilson Rivers gave up one run on three hits in two innings.
Royals' starter Baez threw five inning, coughing up six runs, five earned, on eight hits, while walking three, and striking out five. Dave Middendorf gave up three runs on five hits, while striking out four in his two innings of work. Finishing the game for Burlington was Corey Hall, who allowed no hits in through innings.
Nick Ahmed has struggled against the B-Royals this season, but went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, while three Braves recorded two hits. Chase Larson's home run was his only hit of the night, but the outfielder scored three runs, and had three runs batted in. Drury continued his success against Burlington, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and knocked in two.
Burlington centerfielder Lane Adams had two of his team's six hits, scoring one of the Royals' two runs. Swab and Trapp each went 1-for-3 with Swab, the designated hitter for the home team, scoring Burlington's second run.
The Royals wore special jerseys in honor of Autism Awareness night at the stadium, and played in front of a crowd of 1,655. The two teams will square off at 6:00 on Sunday.
