North Adams SteepleCats News Release

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - After shattering the single-season franchise record book and becoming the first player in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) to record more than 20 stolen bases and 10 doubles in a single season, former North Adams SteepleCat All-Star and Rhode Island junior Jeff Roy (Cranston, R.I.) was recently featured as the cover story for the New England Baseball Journal's 2013 Preseason Issue.

Roy, the 2012 Atlantic-10 Player of the Year and All-NECBL First Team honoree, was tabbed the third-best New England prospect for this summer's Major League Baseball Entry Draft in the issue, as well. He becomes the first collegiate player in over three years to be featured on the cover of the publication.

During his memorable 2012 campaign in the Berkshires, Roy batted .333 on the season with a team-leading and single-season record 40 runs scored. The Cranston, R.I., native finished with 48 hits and 24 stolen bases - another single-season record.

That followed an incredible second-year campaign with the Rams. Last spring, Roy batted .356 with 84 hits, 59 runs, five triples, 115 total bases, 26 multi-hit games, a .487 slugging percentage and a .443 on-base percentage at URI. He was also a College Baseball Insider Honorable Mention All-American selection following his unforgettable year.

Roy and the Rams are off to another challenging start this spring, facing one of the toughest mid-major schedules in the country with road bouts at the likes of Florida State, Ole Miss, Virginia Tech and Notre Dame en route to a 6-11 start to the season. URI will be a threat in the A-10 and look to earn an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament later this season.

Roy, meanwhile, already leads the team with 18 hits through 16 games and has crossed the plate a team-leading 13 times, as well. He owns two doubles, a triple and a perfect 5-for-5 mark in stolen bases so far.

North Adams will welcome two more URI products this summer. One of the, outfielder Joe Landi, is off to a stellar start. The future 'Cat has started in 11 games and leads URI with a .319 batting average while driving in four runs and scoring five, as well.

The SteepleCats open the 2013 season on June 6 at home against Vermont. Season ticket packages are available online (www.steeplecats.com) and through a number of local businesses; visit Val's Variety Store in Adams, Creation's and Man's World Styling Salon in North Adams, and Billmont's Country Store in Stamford, Vt., to inquire about SteepleCat ticket packages for the 2013 season.
