Incoming Westerner Making Headlines

March 18, 2013 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Danbury Westerners News Release

After throwing just the 18th perfect game in NCAA Division II history, incoming 2013 Westerner and Millersville University right-handed pitcher Chris Murphy was named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Pitcher of the Week on Monday.

Murphy is now a two-time winner of the weekly award, having won it following his first no-hitter against Glenville State on Feb. 24. Murphy is the first Millersville pitcher to throw two-hitters in the same season. His perfect game is the first on record at Millersville.

Murphy needed only 64 pitches--52 of which were strikes--to pitch the first perfect game in Division II since 2009 and the first by a PSAC pitcher since 1999. He struck out six batters.

Through six career starts, Murphy holds a 5-1 record and 2.54 ERA over 39 innings. He's also struck out 47 compared to just seven walks. He has totaled no fewer than 5.2 innings each of his six starts and has struck out at least six in each.

Baring any playoff commitments, Murphy will join the 2013 Danbury Westerners roster for an exhibition game in Newtown, CT on June 5th prior to opening night of the NECBL season on June 7th at Roger Park in Danbury.

The Westerners will kick off their season with their annual celebrity breakfast at 7:30am on June 7 at the Amber Room Colonnade -- former Mets pitcher Ron Darling will be the keynote speaker that morning -- and that evening the Westerners will host the Vermont Mountaineers at Rogers Park in the first game of the season.
