Orioles Sign Tucker Nathans

March 18, 2013 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Danbury Westerners News Release

Former Danbury Westerners second baseman Tucker Nathans has signed a contract with the Baltimore Orioles.

Nathans, a 2011 Fairfield University graduate who played both soccer and baseball for the Stags, batted .276 for the Westerners in 2010 and helped lead them to the New England Collegiate Baseball League championship series before falling to the North Shore Navigators. His .481 slugging percentage was fifth in the NECBL that summer. He received All-NECBL second-team honors and was the NECBL's Sportsmanship Award winner as well.

Nathans played last season for the Newark Bears of the independent Can-Am League. He batted .307 with 30 runs batted in and 27 runs and was named the league's Rookie of the Year.

Nathans all but rewrote the record book at Fairfield, graduating as the school's all-time leader in hits (263), doubles (61) and triples (10), and second all-time in runs scored with 141, one run shy of the program record, as well as RBIs (155) and batting average (.352). Nathans played in all 193 games in his Fairfield career and made 180 consecutive starts as a Stag. He is also fifth in career slugging percentage (.536) and seventh in home runs (19).

Nathans joins pitchers Rob Delaney, Branden Kline and Pat Egan as former NECBL players in the Orioles' minor-league camp. Baltimore general manager Dan Duquette owned the NECBL's Pittsfield team for six seasons.

The Westerners will kick off their season with their annual celebrity breakfast on June 7 at the Amber Room Colonnade -- former Mets pitcher Ron Darling will be the keynote speaker that morning -- and that evening the Westerners will host the Vermont Mountaineers at Rogers Park in the first game of the season.
