St. Cloud Rox News Release
St. Cloud, MN -- Looking for a spark before the All-Star break, the Rox (29-19) received another game-winning play in the bottom of the 9th. They had the bases loaded with two outs and Drew Avans (Southeastern Louisiana) at the plate. Once again, he propelled the Rox to a win after he hit a ball sharply to Shortstop, which was then bobbled by a Stingers infielder. Avans beat out the throw to 1st, and Spencer Holcomb (Western Carolina) scored the game-winning run for a 2-1 win.
Holcomb set up that run after his 4th double of the season. Coming in midway through the game, Holcomb only needed one at-bat to make an impact. The Rox made just enough plays to come out on top, and head into the three day hiatus with a good feeling.
St. Cloud opened the scoring in the 2nd inning. Back-to-back doubles from Shane Selman (McNeese State) and Keaton Kringlen (BYU) gave it the early lead with Kringlen's 15th RBI this season.
Robbie Palkert (Nebraska) had another phenomenal start on the mound. The sophomore tied a season high of 8 strikeouts, and gave up just 2 hits in 5 complete innings. He has now pitched 13 consecutive scoreless innings dating back to the 1st half regular season finale where he allowed one run in the 1st inning in Duluth.
The Rox bullpen dominated again. Brent Killam (2-0) earned the win after pitching in the 9th where he retired all three batters that came up. Killam has been unhittable going into the break. The All-Star still hasn't given up a run since Opening Day. The freshman's ERA dropped to 0.55 following his 2nd win.
Ivan Coutinho (Bethune-Cookman) preceded Killam's inning with a solid 8th. He took down Willmar in order in that inning to keep the game tied.
The Rox just had one player with multiple hits, but it didn't matter today. Kringlen led the way with his 2nd three hit game this week.
