Rox nominate Chris Sawyer as LLS Man of the Year

Brockton, MA (March 22, 2007) - The Brockton Rox have announced that the team has nominated former Rox staff member Chris Sawyer for the Massachusetts Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Man of the Year. The nomination marks the start of a major Rox fundraising campaign for the Society in Chris' memory. Chris passed away from non-Hodgkin's lymphoma at the age of 24 in October 2006.

Chris was a hometown hero. He graduated from Brockton High School in 2000 as a National Honor Society scholar and member of the tennis team and marching band. He went on to Syracuse University, where he entertained tens of thousands as Otto the Orange, one of the NCAA's best loved mascots. In 2004 Chris returned home as the Rox kangaroo mascot, K-O. His creative sketches, flashy dance routines and natural ease with children made him a star attraction at Campanelli Stadium and in the community.

'The response so far has been overwhelming. We kicked off the campaign at 8 AM on March 21st and by that afternoon, more than $1,000 had poured in to the www.chrissawyercampaign.org website," said Rox General Manager Andy Crossley. "The Sawyer family and his friends have been instrumental in getting the word out and we have seen generous contributions come in from Indiana, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, in addition to our local fundraising. Now we need to keep raising $1,000 a day for the next eight weeks to really hit a home run for Chris and for Leukemia & Lymphoma research and care."

The Man of the Year Campaign is an annual fundraiser for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's mission to find a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma and to improve the quality of life for patients and their families. From now until May 30th, every dollar the Rox raise is a considered a vote for Chris Sawyer as the Society's Massachusetts Man of the Year. Chris received 1,500 votes in Day One.
