Brockton Rox News Release
Brockton, Mass. - A pair of two-run fifth-inning home runs by DH Melvin Falu and 3B Philip Cuadrado broke a 3-3 tie and propelled the Brockton Rox to a 9-3 victory over the New Jersey Jackals on Friday evening in a Can-Am League contest at Campanelli Stadium.
One night after snapping their eight-game winning streak with an 11-5 loss, the Rox took a first-inning lead on RF Keith Brachold's RBI single and a run-scoring double play off the bat of Cuadrado. Brockton then made it 3-0 in the second on C Chris Grossman's solo home run, his second of the season.
New Jersey (12-15) tied things up in the third on a two-run single by C Jordan Newton, followed by another RBI single courtesy of LF Jared Butler.
The Rox (16-10) took the lead for good in the fifth on Falu's and Cuadrado's home runs, and added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh. After SS Dominic Ramos reached on a third-strike wild pitch, he was brought to third on Chris Valencia's RBI single. With Falu at bat, Valencia stole second, but Newton's throw went into center field, allowing Ramos to score. Valencia then came home on Falu's RBI double.
Starter Mike Wlodarczyk (4-1) picked up the victory for the Rox, allowing three runs on seven hits in six innings of work, striking out two. Josh Papelbon and Colin Lynch combined for three innings of effective relief, fanning four while allowing just two hits.
Jackals' starter Aaron Wideman (3-3) had a rough evening and registered the loss, giving up all nine of the Brockton runs (six earned) in five and one-third frames pitched.
Valencia, Falu, Brachold and Cuadrado each had a pair of hits to lead the offense for Brockton. Butler and CF Jeff Grose had two-hit evenings for New Jersey.
The two teams will play the third of the four-game set on Saturday evening at 6:05 p.m., with Freddy Flores (3-0) on the hill for the Rox against Dan Griffin (2-0). It's Star Wars Night at Campanelli Stadium, with various Star Wars characters on hand to amuse fans.
