New Jersey Jackals News Release
Brockton, MA - The Brockton Rox used a trio of home runs to defeat the New Jersey Jackals 9-3 on Friday night at Campanelli Stadium.
Trailing 3-0, the Jackals used back-to-back two-out singles by catcher Jordan Newton and left fielder Jacob Butler to tie the score at three in the top of the third, but New Jersey was never able to take the lead as the Rox proceeded to score six unanswered runs to conclude the contest.
Brockton southpaw Mike Wlodarczyk (4-1) allowed three runs on seven hits over six innings to earn the win. Jackals left-hander A.J. Wideman (3-3) yielded nine runs, six earned, on 11 hits with six strikeouts and one walk in 5 1/3 innings in the loss. For the Jackals, rookie relievers Brendon Malkowski and Luis Fernandez retired all eight batters they faced. In his professional debut, Malkowski struck out two in 1 2/3 innings while Fernandez retired the side in the bottom of the eighth. Fernandez has now tossed four consecutive scoreless frames out of the bullpen.
Brockton opened the scoring with two unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning before tacking on a run in the second on catcher Chris Grossman's second homer of the season.
In the bottom of the fifth, Brockton took a 7-3 lead on a pair of two-run homers by designated hitter Melvin Falu and third baseman Phillip Cuadrado. An inning later, an RBI double by Falu chased Wideman from the game as Brockton plated two more runs to cap the scoring at 9-3.
Offensively for New Jersey, Butler went 2-for-4 and drove in his 23rd run in 18 games this season. Center fielder Jeff Grose added a double in a 2-for-4 evening at the dish, his second multi-hit performance of the series.
The Jackals (12-15) and Rox (16-10) continue their four-game series on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. when New Jersey sends right-hander Dan Griffin to the mound against Brockton righty Freddy Flores. Cody Chrusciel has the live call on the Jackals webcast beginning 10 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com.
