Brockton Rox News Release
(Brockton, Mass. - July 23, 2011) - The Newark Bears (3-4, 26-28) out-slugged the Brockton Rox (5-2, 31-22) 8-6 in Brockton's longest nine inning game of the season, lasting three hours and 37 minutes at Campanelli Stadium Saturday night.
Both offenses traded blows in the early innings as neither starter fared particularly well in the ballgame. Robert Bono (3-1) took his first loss, allowing seven runs on eleven hits in four innings and Adam Gabel served up four runs on six hits through five and 1/3 frames.
Juan Martinez and Daryle Ward led the way for Newark at the dish. Martinez went 4-for-4 with a home run, three runs scored and two stolen bases as Ward followed closely behind. The former big leaguer finished the night 3-for-5 with a homer, while knocking in two and scoring twice.
Eric McGee also smacked a round-tripper for the Bears and collected two RBIs.
Jake Loye threw four scoreless innings out of the bullpen to keep the Rox within striking distance, but was matched by Newark's Kyle Morrison (2-0), who hurled three shutout frames to earn the win.
Prior to Morrison's entrance, Brockton scratched runs in four straight frames, from the second to the fifth. The Rox drew eight walks in the game, leading to three runs, but also stranded eight runners on base.
The offensive highlights for Brockton included a solo home run by Trey Hernandez (1-for-3, 2 BB) and two-hit nights for both Dominic Ramos (2-for-4, RBI) and Shawn Williams (2-for-4, 2 R). Williams extended his on-base streak to 27 in a row with singles in his first two at bats.
Newcomer Dan Barbero walked three times, including once with the bases loaded and also scored a run.
The Rox cut the lead to one heading into the ninth, but Martinez' solo homer in the top of the inning and solid pitching from Mikey Mehlich in the final inning and 2/3 proved to be too much for Brockton. The marathon ended as Mehlich notched his eighth save and the Bears took the series 2-1.
After Sunday's off day, the Rox head north for Quebec City to begin a four game series and seven game road trip Monday night at Stade Municipal. First pitch in game one is set for 7:05 p.m. as Mike Smith (6-4, 3.46) takes on Matthew Rusch (4-4, 3.21) in the teams' first meeting since June 9.
