Tampa Bay Rowdies News Release
The Tampa Bay Rowdies took a big step forward to shore up their defense on Wednesday with the addition of goalkeeper Kamil Contofalsky. Per club and league policy, contract details were not disclosed.
Contofalsky signed with the club following a successful trial. He arrived earlier in February and played in the Rowdies' preseason opening win over the Philadelphia Union on Feb. 12. Contofalsky played the full game and posted a clean sheet in Tampa Bay's 1-0 win, including several vital saves as the match wound down.
After a long, successful career in Europe, the 36-year old native of Slovakia arrived in the United States last year and spent the 2014 NASL Fall Season with the Fort Lauderdale Strikers. Contofalsky started 18 matches for the Strikers, posting five clean sheets in leading the team to the Soccer Bowl Final. He was twice named to the NASL Team of the Week.
"We're glad Kamil has decided to sign with the Rowdies," Head Coach Thomas Rongen said. "He's a proven, experienced goalkeeper with a track record of success in Europe. He adapted well to the NASL last season. Our goal in building this team has been to have depth and balance all over the field. Competition for starting places keeps all players sharp and that will benefit us tremendously."
Contofalsky's career highlights include winning the 2007-2008 Europa League (then the UEFA Cup) with Russian club Zenit St. Petersburg and following that up with a 2-1 UEFA Super Cup win over Champions League winners Manchester United in Monaco. Contofalsky also represented the Slovakian National Team 34 times in his career.
