San Antonio Scorpions News Release
SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Wednesday, February 25, 2015) - The San Antonio Scorpions have signed Canadian international defender Nana Attakora, President/General Manager Howard Cornfield and Head Coach Alen Marcina announced today. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not released.
"Attakora is a current, experienced, Canadian National Team defender with 70 appearances in Major League Soccer," said Marcina. "He's competed in CONCACAF Champions League while playing for Toronto FC and D.C. United. He is a powerful, fast defender that brings even more stability to our backline."
25-year-old Attakora is a native of New York in Ontario, Canada, and has represented his country at the international level with the U-16, U-17, U-19, U-20, and U-23 squads. He also has nine caps with the senior Canadian Men's National Team, including during World Cup Qualifiers.
"Anytime a player is an active part of his national team's player pool, you take notice," said Cornfield. "We're very pleased to be able bring a player of Attakora's ability to the Scorpions."
The 6'1" center back signed his first professional contract with Toronto FC of Major League Soccer(MLS) in 2007. He made his debut with the first team in 2008 and went on to make 56 appearances in four seasons for the Reds, scoring three goals along the way. After a 2011 trade to the San Jose Earthquakes, Attakora played two seasons for the Bay Area club sandwiched around a stint in the Finnish first division. He most recently played in 2014 for D.C. United and has career MLS totals of 62 starts, three goals, and five assists in 5,491 minutes played.
"I spoke with a few of the guys [on the team] that I have had the opportunity to play with...and they had nothing but positive things to say about the club," said Attakora. "I felt that the mentality here was perfect for me and the coaching staff, the players, and what they're trying to build and achieve here is first class. I just wanted to be a part of it."
Attakora's professional career includes time playing with: Toronto FC (MLS), San Jose Earthquakes (MLS), FC Haka (Veikkausliiga - Finland), and D.C. United (MLS).
With the move, the Scorpions now have fourteen players on the roster for 2015:
