Round Rock Express News Release
FRESNO, California - The state of California continued to stifle the Round Rock Express (68-59) as the E-Train fell to the Fresno Grizzlies (78-48) in 10 innings Friday night at Chukchansi Park, 2-1. The game three loss supplied the Express with its ninth straight defeat and sent the series to 3-0 in favor of the Grizzlies.
Round Rock starter Phil Klein worked diligently through the opening two innings, but was unable to keep the Grizzlies off the board in the third. A one-out single from Fresno RF Alex Presley put runners on the corners for 3B Matt Duffy, spurring a mound visit to assess the situation. Presley went on to steal second after the Round Rock powwow, keeping the pressure on Klein. Duffy then brought in the first run of game three on a ground out for a 1-0 Fresno lead. Klein issued a four-pitch walk to the next batter, but managed his way out of the inning with a strikeout.
The E-Train offense found a pulse in the top of the fifth thanks to SS Beamer Weems' second home run of the season. The one-out solo blast came off Grizzlies starter Mike Hauschild and gave Weems his fifth hit of the series. Hauschild recuperated with consecutive strikeouts to close the top half of the inning.
Klein (1-0, 2.31) looked sharp the remainder of his outing, finishing with 5.1 innings pitched, three hits, one run (earned), three walks and seven Ks. Fellow starter Hauschild (6-3, 3.42) lasted 7.0 innings with five hits, one run (earned), one walk and nine strikeouts.
Both bullpens kept the opposing bats silent through the scheduled nine as extra innings were needed to settle the third act of the series.
Fresno only needed one extra inning to make its move on Express RHP Tanner Scheppers. Scheppers began the 10th with a walk to Grizzlies SS Jonathan Villar and saw the shortstop advance to second on a ground out. Villar then stole third for his 33rd swipe of the season with Duffy at the plate. Duffy collected his third walk of the night and advanced to second on defensive interference. Scheppers went on to intentionally walk 1B Tyler White, loading the bases with one out for DH Jon Singleton. The lefty used a walk-off sacrifice fly to bring in Villar and supply Round Rock with its ninth consecutive loss, 2-1.
Round Rock and Fresno complete the series tomorrow night at Chukchansi Park with a 9:05 p.m. first pitch. Express RHP Robert Coello (0-1, 5.40) takes the hill against Grizzlies RHP Brady Rodgers (9-6, 4.53).
