Fresno Grizzlies News Release
FRESNO, Calif. - The sign of a good team is their ability to manufacture runs when the bats aren't clicking and tonight the Fresno Grizzlies (78-48) used an RBI ground out from Matt Duffy, and a game-ending sacrifice fly by Jon Singleton to snag a 2-1 victory in 10 innings over the Round Rock Express (68-59) on Friday night in front of 11,848 fans at Chukchansi Park. The Grizzlies match their franchise-best win streak of 11 games first set in 1998 and have won 19 of their last 20 games. The magic number to clinch the division and a postseason berth is four.
Fresno starter Mike Hauschild struck out nine, walked one, and scattered five hits over seven innings, but picked up his second straight no decision. He was protecting a 1-0 lead into the fifth until Beamer Weems hit a homer to dead center just out of the reach of a leaping Andrew Aplin. The nine strikeouts were one shy of his season high set on July 1st, while the one run allowed was his fewest in an outing since tossing eight scoreless innings on August 3rd. In four starts during the month of August, the right-hander is 2-0 with a 2.10 ERA (6 ER/25.2 IP), 26 strikeouts, and a .219 (21-96) opponents' average.
Matt Duffy collected his 99th RBI when his ground out in the bottom of the third scored Jonathan Villar. He's on the brink of becoming just the seventh player in Grizzlies history to reach 100 RBI in a season.
The Grizzlies got to reliever Tanner Scheppers in his second inning of work to secure the game-ending victory in the bottom of the 10th. Jonathan Villar drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a ground out, and stole third. With the winning run only 90-feet away, Scheppers walked Duffy and intentionally walked Tyler White to load the bases, but the strategy didn't work in his favor as Jon Singleton hit a deep sac fly to right to bring home the winning run.
The first-place Fresno Grizzlies set aim on earning a franchise-best 12 straight wins on Saturday night at Chukchansi Park when they meet the Round Rock Express in the series finale. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM and the first 1,500 fans through the gates (open at 5:35 PM) receive a #FresnoFamous Robin Lopez Bobblehead, courtesy of PG&E and The Fresno Bee. The Chukchansi Park Box Office opens at 10 AM.
