Round Rock Express News Release

ROUND ROCK - Jeremy Johnson held Iowa to two runs over a season-best eight innings and Round Rock manufactured runs when it needed them to pick up its fifth straight win at home Monday with a 3-2 victory over the Cubs.

Iowa out-hit the Express 8-6 but left nine runners stranded, including two in scoring position with one away in the top of the ninth.

Johnson had allowed 11 runs over his previous two outings, ballooning his ERA nearly a full point to 3.79, but the right-hander began whittling that away in his 11th straight start since leaving the bullpen on May 7.

Johnson scattered seven hits, three strikeouts and a walk and Brendan Donnelly notched his fifth save of the season. Yordany Ramirez and Chad Spann both tallied multi-hit games for the Express (35-42).

The Cubs (40-37) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second after Steve Clevenger led off with a sharp single through the left side of the field.

Chris Robinson followed up with a shot to first that scooted under the glove of Mark Saccomanno, allowing Clevenger to move to third. Nate Spears dropped another single into left field, scoring Clevenger. A sacrifice fly pushed Robinson across.

Yordany Ramirez had the only hit for the Express (a double) heading into the bottom of the fourth and came up big again.

After Brian Bogusevic and John Gall drew back-to-back walks to start the inning, Mark Saccomanno reached on a fielding error by Iowa shortstop Anderson Machado. That brought up Ramirez, who fired an Esmailin Cardidad delivery to right for a run-scoring single.

Chad Spann followed up with an RBI single of his own, evening the score until the bottom of the sixth when Jeremy Johnson singled home Mark Saccomanno with two down.

The two teams meet again Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. on Half-Price Group Night for the series finale at The Dell Diamond.
