Cedar Rapids RoughRiders News Release
Columbus, Ohio- Jacob Cepis rang up a hat trick and added one assist, Pat Cannone collected five assists and Richard Bachman made 26 saves as the RoughRiders rolled to a record breaking 8-0 win Tuesday night in the opening game of their best-of-seven opening round Clark Cup playoff series with the Ohio Junior Blue Jackets.
By scoring eight times, the Riders set new team record for most goals in one game. Cannone broke the club single game post-season assist record while Cepis equaled the Rider individual playoff record for goals in one game.
The Riders broke the game open with four second period goals. Cedar Rapids was already up 1-0- thanks to Kevin Wehrs' first period power play goal- when Casey Wellman triggered the second period onslaught with a fine individual effort. Wellman slipped a checker in the slot and walked in alone to fire the puck under the cross bar at 5:03 of the second.
Tommy Wingels scored the next two Rider goals. The Riders were on the power play when Wingels jammed the puck in from the doorstep to make it 3-0 at 14:23. Wingels stretched the lead to four by banking the puck in off of the Blue Jackets' Dennis Urban at 16:47 of the third.
Just 17 seconds later Cepis scored his first of the night, burying a Cannone centering pass to finish off a 2-on-1 rush and make it 5-0.
Cepis would strike again just 45 seconds into the third period, converting another Cannone set up with a drive from the high slot.
Mike Seidel scored the Riders' third power play goal of the game from point blank range at 12:34 of the third.
Cepis completed his hat trick and Cannone picked up his fifth assist at 16:17 on another 2-on-1. Cannone fed the puck down the slot and Cepis beat Ohio goaltender Corson Cramer (29 saves) from the goalmouth to make it a great eight for Cedar Rapids.
