Ross Colton scored twice and Ben Blacker made 29 saves Thursday in a 5-1 Cedar Rapids RoughRiders win against the Waterloo Black Hawks at Young Arena.

Cedar Rapids capitalized after a couple of first period miscues. Two Hawks collided, leading to the visitors' first goal at 8:57 when Colton lifted a shot through traffic and under the crossbar. Not quite ten minutes later at 18:36, Waterloo worked the puck free deep in their own zone but could not get it out, and from behind the net Liam Walsh set up a Sam Sternschein goal from pointblank range.

The 2-0 count was maintained until the final three minutes of the second period. Nick Swaney recorded the lone Waterloo goal at 17:11, following a puck to the net and flipping it in after it popped out of Ben Blacker's glove.

Colton answered back 17 seconds later, firing a shot from the left corner. The RoughRiders added another with six seconds left before intermission as Justin Cole redirected a power play chance. John DeRoche capped the scoring 1:54 into the third with an opportunity from close range.

The Hawks and RoughRiders meet for an almost-instant rematch in Cedar Rapids Saturday.
