Bensenville, Illinois- Tyler Thompson scored twice and the RoughRiders scored four power play goals on the way to a season-opening 7-2 win over the host Chicago Steel Friday night.

The Riders broke loose for three goals in each of the first two periods. Matt Donovan's drive from just inside the blue line started the onslaught just 2:40 into the game.

The Riders were on the power play when Thompson's blast from the left wing boards doubled the lead at 12:55 of the first.

Kyle Flanagan's tip-in at 14:08 enabled Cedar Rapids to take a 3-0 lead into the first intermission.

Thompson waited just 20 seconds to extend the lead to 4-0 in the second period by sweeping the puck home from the left wing circle.

The Steel finally responded while shorthanded at 5:57 of the second. Brian O'Neill charged down the slot and wristed the puck past Rider goaltender Brady Hjelle (35 saves) to narrow the gap to 4-1.

The Riders reestablished their momentum with back-to-back power play goals later in the middle frame. Cedar Rapids was up one man when Scott Mathis buried a rebound at 11:07; the Riders were in the midst of a two-man advantage when Bryce Aneloski scored from the point at 15:04. Aneloski's goal made it 6-1 and chased Chicago starting goaltender Rob Madore (16 saves).

The clubs swapped power play goals late in the third period. The Riders' Garrett Vermeersch converted a Chris Wideman centering pass at 15:58. At 18:11 Andy Miele gave Chicago a little something to cheer about by punching home a rebound.
