Cedar Rapids RoughRiders News Release
Cedar Rapids, Iowa- The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders' 2006-07 roster will begin to take shape with tomorrow's United States Hockey League draft.
The Riders' first selection will be the eleventh choice of the second round- the twenty-third pick overall pick. The Riders traded their first round pick to the Indiana Ice in January along with forward Aaron Bendickson in exchange for forward Sean Dolan.
The draft order is determined using the reverse order of the 2005-06 USHL standings. The RoughRiders have the second to last choice in each round (after the first) by virtue of having won the USHL's East Division but finished behind the West Division champion Sioux Falls Stampede in the overall standings.
The Chicago Steel, who finished last in the league last season, will have the first choice. Again this year, fans can follow the draft on line at www.ushl.com beginning at 9:00AM.
Players under age 21 who played high school, midget, junior (outside the USHL) or even college hockey last season are all eligible for the draft.
The Riders' draftees will join the team's veterans and affiliated players on the Cedar Rapids protected list.
The RoughRiders' affiliated players last season were forwards Greg Squires, Tommy Wingels, Jordan Baker and Jason Bergeron and defensemen Jared Spurgeon and Colin Trachsel. While none of those players were on the RoughRiders' 2005-06 roster, the Riders do control their USHL rights. They were all selected by the Riders in last August's USHL futures draft.
The RoughRiders' draft picks will compete for roster spots with the veterans and affiliated players as well as a group of undrafted players at the club's 2006 try-out camp June 1-4 at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.
