Cedar Rapids RoughRiders News Release
Cedar Rapids, Iowa- Casey Wellman broke a 1-1 tie with just 58 seconds left in regulation and the host RoughRiders went on to defeat the Lincoln Stars 3-1 Saturday night.
Wellman bulled his way to the net and shoveled the puck past Lincoln goaltender Nick Hopper (24 saves) to give the Riders a 2-1 lead.
Ian Slater's empty net goal with just two seconds left clinched the win.
The Riders found themselves in need of the late heroics provided by Wellman and Slater after Brandon Bollig scored from the close range at 13:39 of the third period to erase a 1-0 Rider lead.
It had taken the Riders until the dying moments of the second period to grab the game's first goal. Just 5.3 seconds remained in the second when Dean Chelios broke the scoreless deadlock by finishing off a nifty give-and-go with Doug Jones.
Rider goaltender Brady Hjelle stopped 38 on shots backstop Cedar Rapids to the victory.
