Springfield Cardinals News Release
Springfield, MO - The Frisco RoughRiders rallied with six runs in the top of the ninth for the 7-4 comeback win against the Springfield Cardinals before the sellout crowd of 6,851 fans at Hammons Field on Sunday. It marked the Cardinals fourth straight sellout crowd to close the homestand.
After Cardinals RHP Andrew Morales and Frisco LHP Victor Payano alternated a pair of scoreless innings to start the game, the Cardinals (27-29, 57-69) cracked the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third. With one away, SS Breyvic Valera, who rejoined Springfield from High-A Palm Beach today, sparked the charge with a walk. Valera quickly raced from first to third on a single by CF Charlie Tilson, putting runners at the corners with only one down. LF Mike O'Neill then chopped into an RBI fielder's choice that retired Tilson but brought home Valera, lifting the Cardinals into the 1-0 lead.
The Cardinals doubled the advantage in the bottom of the fourth. With one away, C Michael Ohlman worked a walk, before he promptly raced around to third on a double from 2B Bruce Caldwell. With runners at second and third, 3B Patrick Wisdom bounced an RBI groundout to second base, plating Ohlman from third for the 2-0 Springfield advantage.
Morales kept the RoughRiders (27-28, 56-69) at bay through his first five scoreless innings, but Frisco got on the board in the top of the sixth. Leading off the inning, CF Lewis Brinson drove a solo shot to right field, cutting the RoughRiders deficit to just one run. Morales bounced back with a pair of outs, before giving way to RHP Joey Donofrio after a two-out single from 1B Trever Adams. Donofrio took care of LF Ryan Cordell with a strikeout, ending the stanza with the Cardinals ahead, 2-1.
The Cardinals got the run back right away in the bottom of the sixth inning. With Payano still on the mound, RF David Washington and Ohlman knocked consecutive singles to open the frame. Caldwell then laced an RBI base hit to left-center field, bringing in Washington and moving Ohlman to third with still nobody out. RHP Jose Valdespina took over on the mound, but was charged with a balk while facing Wisdom, scoring Ohlman from third to make it 4-1.
Donofrio and LHP Ryan Sherriff combined to toss a scoreless seventh, followed by a 1-2-3 frame from RHP Ronnie Shaban in the eighth. However, the RoughRiders rallied in the top of the ninth against RHP Robby Rowland (L, 0-2). 1B Trever Adams and LF Ryan Cordell opened the inning with consecutive walks, before an RBI double by 2B Luis Mendez. One out later, 3B Guilder Rodriguez worked a walk to reload the bases, followed by a go-ahead three-run triple from RF Preston Beck. After RHP Silfredo Garcia took over on the mound, the final two runs in the rally came home on an error and an RBI base hit from 2B Drew Robinson, opening the Riders new advantage to 7-4.
After striking out the side in the eighth, Frisco RHP Jesus Pirela (W, 2-3) tossed a scoreless bottom of the ninth to close the 7-4 comeback win for the RoughRiders.
