Former Driller Helps Midland Complete Sweep of Tulsa
August 24, 2015 - Texas League (TL1)
Tulsa Drillers News Release
Tulsa starter Jose De Leon started the game Sunday by striking out the first batter he faced. But things went downhill from there as the RockHounds' offense came out swinging as they launched four home runs and four doubles in the first four innings against three different Tulsa pitchers. Meanwhile, former Driller and Tulsa-native Parker Frazier mowed down the Drillers over seven strong innings as Midland completed a three-game sweep of Tulsa with a 12-1 win at ONEOK Field.
Bishop Kelley product Frazier, throwing in front of over 100 family and friends, pitched like he felt at home. He earned the win after tossing seven innings of one-run ball, upping his record to 4-1 while lowering his ERA to 1.91 while with the RockHounds.
Since being signed by the Oakland Athletics in July and assigned to Double-A Midland, Frazier has enjoyed a one of his best stretches as a professional. After Sunday's start, Frazier has now allowed three runs or fewer in eight of his last nine starts.
De Leon started the night with a limited pitch count and he was unable to make it past the second inning. Although five of his six outs came via the strikeout, the RockHounds touched him up for two home runs and a double as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead at the end of the second inning.
Facing Tulsa reliever Ramon Benjamin in the third did not cool off the Midland bats as they added three runs in the third and three more in the fourth inning against Benjamin and Deck McGuire, taking a 9-0 advantage to the fifth.
The Drillers scored a lone run in the sixth when an RBI single from Peter Lavin scored Erisbel Arruebarrena to break up Frazier's shutout bid.
Midland added a run in the seventh and two in the eighth to bring the score to its final 12-1 tally.
Lars Anderson will get the opportunity to continue his eight-game hitting streak when Tulsa plays again on Tuesday as he went 0-0 with four walks on the night. He capped his night by tossing a scoreless ninth inning on the mound as the eighth Drillers pitcher of the game.
Tulsa will have an off day Monday before beginning a crucial, 4-game series with the first-place Arkansas Travelers in Little Rock on Tuesday. Julio Urias (3-4, 3.03 ERA) will start the opener for the Drillers while Arkansas has yet to announce a starter. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10PM.
