Roughnecks Roll into Post-Season with 75-32 Win Over Corpus

TX. : The Roughnecks set the tone early on Saturday, June 19 against the Corpus Christi Hammerheads from the Ector County Coliseum, as the Roughnecks won their fourth straight with a 75-32 final over Corpus Christi. Roughnecks DB Austin Smith intercepted Hammerheads QB Wesley Cooper on the first play from scrimmage to give the Roughnecks an early 6-0 advantage. The Roughnecks extended their lead to 13-0 following a three-yard touchdown run from FB Jermaine Blakely.

The Hammerheads cut the deficit to 13-7 when Wesley Cooper connected with WR Julius Eppinger for a 25-yard touchdown pass. But the Roughnecks went on to control the ball game in the first half by extending their lead to 37-7 with two touchdown passes from Tommy Jones to wide outs Ryan Bugg and Steve Bergeski. The Hammerheads tacked on a late first-half score on a one-yard touchdown run to make it a 37-14 halftime score.

The Roughnecks continued their offensive success in the second-half as Tommy Jones found WR Dexter Henderson for a six-yard touchdown pass to make it 47-14. Following a two-yard touchdown run from Deandrae Fillmore to make it a 47-20 ball game, Tommy Jones connected with Henderson for another touchdown pass to give the Roughnecks a 54-20 lead. Roughnecks DB Antonio Sims would post a 25-yard fumble recovery returned for a touchdown as Roughnecks RB Rashaud Slaughter recorded two touchdown runs to close out the game at 75-32.

The Roughnecks finish the regular season at 7-7 and enter the post-season riding a four-game winning streak and having won five out of their last six games. Corpus Christi finishes the regular season at 6-8 as they enter the post-season next weekend. The Roughnecks will travel to Amarillo to face the Venom in the first round of the 2010 IFL Playoffs as the Hammerheads will travel to Arkansas to face the Diamonds.
