Blizzard Beat Slaughter; Clinch Division Title
Green Bay, Wis. - The Green Bay Blizzard wanted revenge when the Chicago Slaughter came to town. The Slaughter had beaten Green Bay twice before by a total of six points. The Blizzard got its revenge when they beat the Slaughter 55-30 to win the North Division Championship.
The first half between the two teams was low scoring. Chicago was the first to score and the only team to score in the first quarter when they made a field goal to lead 3-0. Green Bay answered back with nine in the second quarter. The Slaughter scored a touchdown and missed the PAT for the game to be tied 9-9 at half.
The Blizzard's offense came to life in the second half. Willie Copeland, replaced Brad Iciek at quarterback and Green Bay went on to score 27 points in the third quarter. Randy Bell started the scoring for the Blizzard with a one yard touchdown run.
The Slaughter came back for a five play drive and put a field goal on the board to go down 16-12. After the Slaughter put the field goal on the board, Green Bay scored less than a minute later. Copeland found wide receiver Derek Deardorff for a 20 yard touchdown pass. Tino Amancio tacked on the PAT to lead 23-12.
Four minutes later, in the third quarter, Copeland found Deardorff for their second touchdown of the game on a 29 yard pass. Amancio's PAT was blocked and the Blizzard led 29-12.
The Slaughter looked to be coming back to score but the Blizzard defense had another idea. Tavares Woodley dropped back in the pocket and his pass was tipped by Carlton Bailey and picked off by Adrian McLeod. McLeod returned the interception for a touchdown and Amancio tacked on the PAT to extend the lead of the Blizzard to 36-12.
Woodley took the Slaughter down the field the next time they had the ball. He found Reggie Gray for a seven yard touchdown pass. The Slaughter went for two but Woodley's pass was intercepted. This put the Blizzard lead at 36-18.
Copeland continued to lead the Blizzard down the field. He found Daniel Robinson for a seven yard touchdown and Amancio's PAT was blocked and the Blizzard lead went to 42-18.
The Slaughter came back right away and scored on a touchdown pass when Woodley found Chris Goffer on a 31 yard touchdown pass. On the proceeding kickoff, BJ Hill took the kickoff 45 yards to the end zone to extend the Blizzard lead to 49-24.
When Amanico kicked off following Hill's touchdown, Reggie Gray took the kick 50 yards to the end zone. The Slaughter missed the two point conversion and the Blizzard lead 49-30.
