Calgary Roughnecks News Release
Calgary, AB ( Wednesday, November 9, 2005) - The Calgary Roughnecks begin their pursuit of the 2006 National Lacrosse League championship this weekend when full training camp opens in Richmond, British Columbia.
"We feel a training camp in Vancouver will be good for us for a couple of reasons," said General Manager Kurt Silcott.
"First, we have a number of players from the Vancouver area trying out for us this year. While our goal is to eventually get all Roughnecks living in Calgary, as of now the majority of Roughnecks and potential Roughnecks make the West Coast their home."
Silcott continued, "Another reason is that camp in Vancouver allows our current players living in Calgary to get away and focus just on lacrosse for the weekend.
"We are committed to building this team in a family-like atmosphere and sometimes the best way to bond as a unit is to get away from the every day distractions at home."
He added, "We will start practising in Calgary on December 3 at which point we will be a lot closer to knowing what our final roster will be."
Thirty-five players have been invited to this week-end's camp, including veterans, rookies and free agents. But Silcott says management will soon trim that number to 26 - 23 on the roster and three practice players.
Off-season signings, Rob Kirkby and Chris Panos, both of whom used to play for Calgary, will be in Richmond, as will the Riggers first pick in the 2005 NLL entry draft, Callum Crawford.
"We have high hopes for Callum," said Silcott, "and he'll be given every chance to strut his stuff."
The Calgary Roughnecks open the 2006 season with a home game against league newcomers, the Edmonton Rush.
