Roughnecks Re-Sign Top Goal Scorer Sammy Ochoa
December 3, 2015 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
FC Tulsa News Release
Tulsa Roughnecks FC and head coach David Irving continued to build their 2016 roster with a second player signing today. The Roughnecks and Irving announced that forward Sammy Ochoa has inked a two-year deal with the club.
Ochoa led the Roughnecks in their inaugural season with 9 goals and 21 total points. The 29-year-old provides experience for the Roughnecks as his career has included a stint in MLS with the Seattle Sounders and time in Liga MX with Tecos FC.
Last season, the striker appeared in 27 of Tulsa's 28 regular season matches. His nine goals included two game-winners.
"We are happy to have secured Sammy's services for the next two seasons," said Irving. "He is a good veteran that provides valuable leadership qualities, and he could be the leading scorer in the league."
Ochoa's career has also included international duty as he represented the United States U-20s at the 2005 FIFA Youth Championships in the Netherlands. He played in all four of the USA's games under coach Sigi Schmidt, scoring one goal.
He also made two appearances for the USA U-23 squad.
Ochoa began his professional career the following year by making five appearances with Tecos in the Mexican Premier League. He spent a total of five seasons with the club before making the move to MLS.
In 2011, his first year with the Sounders, he scored a pair of goals, but it was the following year that he enjoyed his most success. Ochoa scored a total of 8 goals in 18 appearances, including three in the CONCACAF Champions League.
After playing in only eight games for the Sounders in 2013, Ochoa joined Coach Irving in Wilmington, North Carolina and played one season for the Hammerheads, scoring six times.
