Calgary Roughnecks News Release
Calgary, AB - The 2006 season is over for the Calgary Roughnecks due to a heartbreaking overtime loss to fierce rivals the Colorado Mammoth.
The score was knotted 17=17 at the end of regulation, but Brian Langtry - who scored five times in Calgary last week when the Mammoth pounded the Riggers 17-7 - applied the killer blow after only 1:15 of overtime.
Colorado now proceed to the final of the National Lacrosse League's West Division.
"Any time you score 17 goals you should win comfortably," said Roughnecks General Manager Kurt Silcott. "But it was one of those games where offence was going to win the day and we came up a little short.
""We were down 11-7 and got back to even the score and then got a bad bounce which caused us to lose."
Silcott added, "This was a tremendous, evenly matched game played by some extraordinary athletes."
Neither starting goalie finished the course. Calgary switched netminders just before the interval, and Colorado followed early in the third.
Roughnecks starter Curtis Palidwor allowed 10 goals on 30 shots, while his replacement Andrew Leyshon stopped all but eight of 34 shots.
At the other end, Gee Nash (12 goals on 31 shots) gave way to the eventual winner, former Calgary property Chris Levis. Levis made 18 saves on 23 shots.
The teams were tied 4-4 after one period; Colorado led 11-10 at the half and then stretched that advantage to 15-12 at the end of the third stanza.
The Riggers fought back in the final 15 minutes and with less than a minute left, Kevin Dostie potted his 5th goal of the night to tie it up at 17-17.
But it was all for nought when Langtry potted the overtime winner.
Devan Wray won the face-off battle against the Mammoth's Jamie Hanford 23-36, and collectively the team controlled far more loose balls (95 to 72) than the opposition. Even the much-maligned power play put seven in the net.
Both Dostie (5g, 4a) and Lewis Ratcliff (2g, 7a) registered nine points for the Riggers. Captain Tracey Kelusky supplied eight (4g, 4a), Kaleb Toth (1g, 4a) and Jason Wulder (2g, 3a) five apiece, and Kyle Goundrey (4a) four.
Mammoth skipper Gavin Prout collected 12 points (5g, 7a), with other goals coming from Langtry (4), Andrew Burkholder (4), and Josh Sims, Jay Jalbert, Ben Prepchuk and Dan Stroup each getting one.
