Tulsa Roughnecks FC continued its strong run of play Thursday night with a resounding 5-1 victory over Real Monarchs SLC in downtown Tulsa. The Roughnecks got a pair of goals from Tulsa Union High School and University of Tulsa product Cristian Mata to help move back into a Western Conference playoff position.

The victory moved Tulsa's record above .500 for the first time this season at 10-9-5. The Roughnecks also moved ahead of Sacramento and Orange County into fifth spot in the West table with 35 points. The top six teams in the conference make the USL playoffs.

Each side missed chances early in the match before the Roughnecks began their big offensive night in the 23rd minute. Henri Manhebo took a pass from Chad Bond and delivered a right-footed shot into the corner of the net to give Tulsa a 1-0 lead. It was the first-ever USL goal for the Henri.

The Monarchs provided a response in the 30th minute. Maikon Orellana got behind the Tulsa defense and blasted a shot past Jake Feener to level the score.

It took the Roughnecks only two minutes to go back in front and it came via a corner from Iarfhlaith Davoren. His left-footed cross found an unmarked Lucas Cordeiro in front of goal. Cordeiro's header beat Monarchs' keeper Eduardo Fernandez, giving Tulsa a 2-1 lead at the halftime break.

The third goal came 12 minutes into the second half, and it came from a superb buildup from the Roughnecks. A series of passes found Steven Miller on the right wing whose cross found an unmarked Mata in front of goal. The striker calmly slotted home for his first goal of the match.

The red-hot Sammy Ochoa got on the score sheet in the 74th minute. The former Seattle Sounders forward headed home a cross from Chad Bond to put the Roughnecks up 4-1. It is the fourth straight match that Ochoa has scored a goal, and it was his fifth goal in the past four matches.

A couple minutes later Mata struck again to cap the big night. A back header from the Monarchs went directly to Mata who first-timed a shot past Fernandez and into the far corner of the net for his second goal of the match and his 5th in 11 matches this season.

Tulsa has only one loss since June 27. In that stretch, the Roughnecks have compiled 6-1-2 record.

In their past two home matches, they have scored 11 goals. They are now the second-highest scoring side in the USL with 44 goals, only one behind league leader Pittsburgh.

The Roughnecks will likely need to keep the goals coming to keep their hot streak going. They will host Louisville City FC on Saturday night at ONEOK Field. Louisville got four goals from Matt Fondy Wednesday night in its last outing, also a 5-1 win at Harrisburg. City are currently in the second spot in the Eastern Conference.

It was not all good news for the Roughnecks in Thursday's win. Davoren, who was member of last week's USL Team of the Week, picked up two yellow cards in the match. The resulting red card means the defender will miss the match with Louisville City through suspension

Kickoff on Saturday night is scheduled for 7:30PM.
