Roughnecks fall to Swarm

Calgary, AB- Despite five goals and one assist off the stick of Dane Dobbie, the Calgary Roughnecks lost 17-13 to the Minnesota Swarm in front of 10,486 fans at the Pengrowth Saddledome on Friday night.
Scott Ranger scored twice and had three assists, while Josh Sanderson set up five goals for the Roughnecks (6-5), who failed to gain ground on the Western Division leading Washington Stealth (8-3).
Ryan Benesch had an impressive 11-point outing (2g, 9a) for the Swarm (5-5), while Aaron Wilson counted four goals and two helpers. Goalie Nick Patterson played well in net for Minnesota as he stopped 59 of 72 shots he faced.
Nolan Heavenor (1g, 3a), Jeff Shattler (1g, 3a) and Craig Conn (2g, 2a) also had strong games for Calgary, while Peter McFetridge counted his first two goals of the campaign.
For the second straight game, Mike Poulin got the call in net for the Roughnecks, but couldn't build on his strong performance from last weekend when he backstopped Calgary to a 13-7 road win over the Orlando Titans. Poulin stopped 11 of 18 shots he faced before being replaced late in the second quarter by Matt King, who made seven saves in a relief appearance. Poulin actually returned to the net in the fourth quarter and made two more saves.
Callum Crawford notched two goals and seven assists for Minnesota, while Sean Pollock (2g, 3a), Kevin Ross (3g) and Tim Campeau (3a) also had multiple-point performances. Richard Morgan, Andrew Watt, Jon Sullivan and Jay Thorimbert each scored once.
Heavenor started things off for the home squad at 1:21 of the first quarter when he took a pass from Shattler and fired a shot past Patterson. A short time later, the Swarm responded as Wilson and Bensesch scored goals to put Minnesota up 2-1.
Ranger then tied up the score when he cut past Jay Thorimbert of the Swarm and faked a shot before picking the top corner over Patterson's right shoulder. The Swarm pulled ahead once again on a short-handed goal by Ross before Conn tied up the score at 3-3 with 20 seconds left in the first quarter.
The Riggers took a 5-3 lead early in the second quarter after Dobbie scored back-to-back goals 19 seconds apart.
Calgary then got into a bit of penalty trouble when Curtis Manning took a five-minute major for high-sticking while Andrew McBride was also sent to the sin bin for two minutes for cross-checking. The Swarm capitalized when Wilson scored during the two-man advantage before Crawford also counted a power-play goal to tie the score at 5-5.
Playing in just his second game of the season, McFetridge put the Riggers up by one with his first goal of the season before Ross and Wilson replied for Minnesota. That marked the end of Poulin's night in net as he was replaced by King after stopping 11 of 18 shots he faced.
With 36 seconds to go in the first half, Ranger scored his second of the contest to tie up the game at 7-7.
On a two-man advantage for Calgary at 4:54 of the third quarter, Dobbie bounced a shot past Patterson to complete his hat trick.
Despite firing a barrage of shots at Patterson during a five-minute major to Morgan for cross-checking, the Roughnecks couldn't build on their lead. Instead, Patterson lobbed a perfect pass to Morgan when he left the penalty box and the 6-foot-8, 260-pound defenceman capitalized on his breakaway attempt to tie the score once again.
The see-saw battle continued as Watt scored for Minnesota before Dobbie counted his fourth goal of the contest. After Pollock scored for the Swarm, McFetridge replied with his second of the game to make the score 10-10 after three quarters.
The Swarm pulled ahead by a pair early in the fourth quarter with power-play goals by Wilson and Ross before Dobbie pulled the Riggers back within a goal when he fired a long-range shot past Patterson.
From that point on, the Swarm took over the game and outscored the Riggers by a 5-2 margin as they were led by Benesch who added four more points to cap off his impressive evening.
Calgary now has a week to prepare for a two-game road trip next weekend when they will face the Toronto Rock on Friday, April 2 followed by a meeting with the Knighthawks in Rochester the following evening. The Riggers will then return home to the 'Dome to take on the Colorado Mammoth on Saturday, April 10 (7:30 p.m. start time).
