West Texas Roughnecks News Release

MIDLAND, TX - The West Texas Roughnecks held their home-opener of the 2010 season on Saturday night (March 13) versus the Amarillo Venom, however, early turnovers led to scoring drives for the Venom and the Roughnecks defense could not slow down the Venom offense in a 53-27 loss to Amarillo.

Following an early interception in the first quarter, the Venom got on the board first with a five-yard touchdown run from WR Alex Watson making it 6-0. Amarillo extended their lead to 13-0 when QB Julian Reese completed a 23-yard touchdown pass to WR Carl Johnson on a fourth down and long situation. The Roughnecks cut the Amarillo deficit to 13-6 when Jorvorskie Lane ran in a four-yard touchdown run to make it 13-6. However, Amarillo countered with 14 unanswered points when Julian Reese found DuVaughn Flagler for a eight-yard touchdown pass. Flagler returned to the end-zone for an 11-yard touchdown run to give Amarillo a 27-6 advantage.

The Roughnecks stormed back into the ball game in the second quarter when DeWayne Hogan posted his first touchdown run of the season from seven yards out to make it 27-13. After the Roughnecks held the Venom on fourth down, QB Tommy Jones hooked up WR Johnny Anderson for a 10-yard touchdown pass to make it 27-20. A late touchdown pass from Julian Reese to Carl Johnson from nine yards out switched the momentum back to Amarillo at halftime, 34-20.

The Venom broke the game wide open in the second half as the Roughnecks offense could only manage seven points in the second half. Julian Reese posted a nine-yard touchdown pass to DuVaughn Flagler to extend Amarillo's lead to 40-20. Running back Sha'Ron Edwards added two key touchdown runs from eight and five yards out in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach. The Roughnecks one second half score came from a DeWayne Hogan two-yard touchdown run. The win moves the Roughnecks back to 1-1 on the year and the Venom start out the 2010 regular season at 1-0.
