
Roughnecks Defeat Venom In Amarillo, 66-23

MIDLAND, TX.: With impressive performances from both sides of the football, the West Texas Roughnecks came away with a 66-23 Lone Star Divisional win over the Amarillo Venom on Saturday evening (April 23) from the Amarillo Civic Center. The game was relatively close throughout much of the first half, but the Roughnecks defense went on to record six interceptions, including three interceptions from DB Marrio Norman and QB Arkelon Hall posted six total touchdowns to help the Roughnecks improve to 6-2 on the season.
The Roughnecks started the ball game leading 3-0 following a 22-yard field goal from Zeke Arevalo in the first quarter. Amarillo would counter with a 35-yard touchdown pass from QB Derek Rasmussen to WR Steve Bergeski to give the Venom a 7-3 lead. The Roughnecks would retake the lead at 10-7 when QB Arkelon Hall scored on a one-yard touchdown run on fourth down and goal. After Amarillo tied the game at 10, Arkelon Hall found Roughnecks WR Wilson Kimble for a 26-yard touchdown pass to give the Roughnecks a 17-10 lead at halftime. Roughnecks defensive backs Derrick Boyd, Marrio Norman, and Anthony Beck all came away with interceptions in the first half.
The Roughnecks opened the second-half in strong fashion as DB Marrio Norman recorded his second interception off QB Derek Rasmussen which would lead to a 33-yard touchdown pass from Arkelon Hall to WR Josh Floyd. With the Roughnecks leading 24-10, Amarillo would counter with a 14-yard touchdown pass from Derek Rasmussen to WR Raymond Johnson making it 24-17. Following that score, the Roughnecks would go on to score 21-unanswered points with a 21-yard touchdown pass from Arkelon Hall to Josh Floyd, a two-yard touchdown run from RB Evin Jones, and a 27-yard interception returned for a touchdown by DB Anthony Beck to take a 45-17 lead.
Roughnecks QB Arkelon Hall would tack on two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter on a one-yard touchdown run, and a 19-yard touchdown pass to Josh Floyd as DB Marrio Norman would record his third interception of the game off QB Ken Johnson, Jr. With the 66-23 win over Amarillo the Roughnecks are now 6-2 heading into their third and final bye week of the 2011 regular season as the Amarillo Venom (0-8) continue their home stretch and host the Allen Wranglers next Saturday, April 30.
