CALGARY, AB - Captain Tracey Kelusky notched a hat trick and added five assists to lead the Calgary Roughnecks to a 15-7 win over the visiting Philadelphia Wings on Saturday night.
Scott Ranger fired four goals and added an assist for the Roughnecks (5-3), who have won four straight games to pull into a tie with the Edmonton Rush for second place in the National Lacrosse League's Western Division.
Josh Sanderson continued his torrid scoring pace this season with a goal and six helpers in front of an appreciative crowd of 11,007 fans at the Pengrowth Saddledome.
Kaleb Toth scored twice and set up three others, while Jeff Shattler (2g, 1a) and Dane Dobbie (1g, 4a) also had multiple-point performances. Craig Conn and Scott Carnegie, with his first of the season, also scored.
Goalie Matt King made 40 saves in Calgary's net to improve his record to 4-2 this season.
Kyle Wailes had a hat trick for the Wings (2-7), who dropped to last spot in the Eastern Division. Drew Westervelt counted a goal and four assists for Philadelphia, Mat Giles scored once and set up another, while Bob McGlone and John Christmas added singles.
Brandon Miller started in net for Philadelphia and stopped 29 of 42 shots he faced before being replaced in net in the third quarter by Rob Blasdell, who made 12 saves in a relief appearance.
The Roughnecks jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first quarter as Sanderson drew assists on goals by Toth and Shattler to reach the 900-point plateau in his 13th NLL season.
After Giles wired a low shot past King to get Philadelphia on the board, Sanderson went to work again as he spotted Ranger cutting towards the net and hit him with a perfect pass. Ranger then faked a shot before flicking the ball over Miller's shoulder to put the Riggers up 3-1.
The Wings drew to within one on a power-play goal by Wailes before Kelusky bounced a shot past Miller as time expired in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Riggers built up their lead to 7-2 as Ranger sandwiched a pair of goals around one by Toth.
Shortly after the 'Necks killed off a two-man disadvantage that spanned 71 seconds, Westervelt fired a long-range shot past King at the 12:54 mark of the second stanza.
That sparked a scoring outburst of four goals in less than a minute as Kelusky scored for Calgary at 13:16 before Wailes replied for Philadelphia seven seconds later. Sanderson then answered back for the Riggers with 1:13 left in the half to give Calgary a 9-4 lead.
The Riggers then built up their advantage to 13-5 by the 12:37 mark of the third quarter on goals by Kelusky, Shattler, Dobbie and Conn, which marked the end of the night for Miller who was replaced in goal by Blasdell.
Ranger and Scott Carnegie scored in the final frame for the Riggers, while Christmas and Wailes replied for the Wings.
Next up, the Roughnecks will host the Washington Stealth (6-3) on Saturday, March 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the 'Dome. The season series between the two squads will be on the line. The Stealth won 16-15 in Calgary on Jan. 23 before the Riggers responded with a 13-9 victory on Feb. 19 in Everett, Wash.
