West Texas Roughnecks News Release
ODESSA, TX: In a late preseason move, the Odessa Roughnecks announced the acquisition of former Arena Football League DL Elex Reed on Friday, March 27. Reed already joined the Roughnecks in training camp on Thursday, March 26 and he will add depth to what looks to be a very strong defensive line for Odessa in '09.
Reed (6'5", 270 lbs.) signed with the Cleveland Gladiators of the Arena Football League in February of 2008. Reed registered .5 (one assisted) total tackles in '08 helping the Gladiators to a 9-7 regular season record and a berth in the AFL playoffs.
"Elex has incredible talent and I"m looking forward to working with him in Odessa. He has great speed off the D-Line and he has the ability to put pressure on the quarterback on a consistent basis. His experience at higher levels of indoor professional football is a big asset towards our club." stated Odessa Roughnecks Head Coach, Chris Williams.
Reed played with the Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings of the AF2 in 2007. He made an immediate impact for the Battle Wings being named the Russell Athletic Lineman of the Year as a rookie. He finished '07 with 37.5 total tackles and a league-best 25.0 tackles for loss. He ranked second overall with 17.5 sacks. Reed also forced three fumbles and blocked two kicks. He set an AF2 single-game record with six sacks against the Texas Copperheads on April 14, 2007. He was a catalyst behind Bossier-Shreveport's best regular season record finish in history at 11-5 which led to the organization's first ever playoff berth.
Reed attended Division III powerhouse Mary-Hardin Baylor where he was a four-year letter-winner and a three-time All-American Southwest Conference selection. Reed was named the captain of the United States team in the 2005 Aztec Bowl (Division III all-star game vs. Mexico).
