Roosters Take Two of Three from Chillicothe

June 6, 2003 - Frontier League (FL)
Richmond Roosters News Release

The Richmond Roosters concluded their series with division rival Chillicothe Thursday night, drubbing the Paints 11-0. Gloomy and cold weather kept the attendance down in the first two games, but a season high 1843 fans came out to enjoy a perfect evening for baseball in the series finale. The series featured two blow outs with an extra inning battle sandwiched in between.

In game one of the series Chillicothe rallied behind a strong performance by starter Bob Burris to record an 8-1 victory. Burris went the distance for the Paints while not surrendering a run until the Roosters were down to their final out. Key Voshell drove in the lone run for Richmond with a two out double in the ninth inning.

The Roosters took control of Wednesday’s game entering the ninth inning with a 4-2 advantage. Chillicothe fought back to tie the game with two solo home runs to force the game into extra innings. Richmond loaded the bases in the tenth, but was unable to score. The team quickly loaded the bases again in the eleventh, this time with no outs. The Paints’ infield was drawn in to get the force at the plate when Key Voshell hit a hard grounder to the right side of the infield. Paints’ first baseman Darin Kinsolving was unable to stop the hit and Rory Thornton scored to push Roosters to the 5-4 victory. Pitcher Mike Henry picked up the win for the Roosters after pitching two scoreless innings.

The series finale took place on a gorgeous, sunny day that seemed to bring out the best in the Roosters. Starting pitcher Chris Spigner was nearly flawless while giving up only three hits in his first complete game shutout of the season. Richmond’s offense was potent as well, banging out twelve hits on their way to a 11-0 victory. Pete Pirman and Jose Sandoval Jr. led the Roosters assault. Pirman collected three hits in five at-bats, driving in three runs, while Sandoval scored three times. Spigner has not allowed any runs in his three starts this season, and now owns a 3-0 record.

The Roosters take to the road today as they head east for three with the Florence Freedom at Foundation Field in Hamilton, Ohio. Richmond’s overall record stands at 8-4, trailing the Washington Wild Things by a single game in the Frontier League’s East Division. The Roosters will play in Hamilton through the weekend before returning home for the first inter-divisional play of the year. The six game homestand features two game sets with Cook County, Kenosha, and Rockford.

The homestand will feature the debut of a new event for the Roosters this year. Kids’ Day Out is scheduled for Wednesday’s game against Cook County and will have a special 11:35 start time. Bring the kids, or drop by for lunch and a little daytime baseball at McBride Stadium.
