Long Island Nets News Release
LONG ISLAND - The NBA G League announced today that Long Island Nets Head Coach Ronnie Burrell was named the 2022-23 NBA G League Coach of the Year. Burrell was selected for the honor in a vote by NBA G League head coaches and general managers. The award marks the second in franchise history and the first for Long Island since the 2018-19 season.
Burrell is in his first season as Long Island's head coach and his second season with the team overall after spending the 2019-20 season as an assistant coach. He also spent the 2018-19 season as a player development and video assistant in Brooklyn. Burrell led Long Island to a 23-9 overall record in the regular season, tied for the second-best record in the NBA G League this season. The team led the Eastern Conference and clinched its third playoff berth in franchise history. Long Island finished the regular season ranked first in defensive rating (103.7), second in 3-point field goal percentage (37.9), net rating (8.6) and steals per game (10.9), fourth in 3-pointers made per game (14.4) and seventh in defensive rebounds per game (34.6). On the defensive end, the Nets held their opponents to the lowest field goal percentage (45.1) and fewest points per game (107.3) in the league. Burrell was recognized as the NBA G League Coach of the Month twice during the season for both January and February, winning consecutive Coach of the Month honors for the first time in Long Island history and the fourth time in NBA G League history. He also led the Nets to a franchise-record 16-game winning streak that spanned from Jan. 14 through March 9 and marked the third-longest winning streak in NBA G League history.
Burrell will be presented with the Dennis Johnson Trophy this morning by NBA G League President Shareef Abdur-Rahim before today's Eastern Conference Semifinals game against the Cleveland Charge at Nassau Coliseum.
