Mississippi Braves News Release
Montgomery, AL - With a chance to gain a game in the Southern League South race, the Mississippi Braves were unable to push across a run on Wednesday night, falling to the Montgomery Biscuits 5-0 at Riverwalk Stadium.
Enny Romero threw seven shutout innings for Montgomery (27-32, 64-65), striking out seven and walking one to pick up his 11th win of the season.
The Biscuits jumped on Gus Schlosser almost instantly. Shortstop Shawn O'Malley and second baseman Robi Estrada led off the bottom of the first with back-to-back walks. Centerfielder Mikie Mahtook hit a line drive single to center, plating O'Malley to make it 1-0.
Then after Curt Casali walked to load the bases, Cameron Seitzer grounded out to first, forcing in a run to make it 2-0 in the first.
Montgomery scored twice more in the third, ending Schlosser's day early. Mahtook, Casali, Seitzer and Todd Glaesmann hit four straight singles to start the inning, including an RBI for Seitzer. Then with the bases loaded, Mayo Acosta singled to make it 4-0, and that was all for Schlosser.
The Braves' starter went 2 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits and three walks. The loss was just his fifth of the season.
For Mississippi (32-26; 70-58), Ronan Pacheco and Juan Jaime combined for a brilliant 3 2/3 innings of shutout relief work, holding the Biscuits hitless until the late frames, but the Braves offense couldn't strike back.
Montgomery tacked on another run against reliever James Hoyt in the seventh. Mahtook doubled and Casali singled to drive him home, making it 5-0 Biscuits.
The Braves were led at the plate by Greg Golson and Jaime Pedroza, who each tallied two hits.
With Jacksonville's 3-1 loss in Chattanooga, the Braves remain 1.5 games back in the South division race with just 11 games remaining.
Mississippi and Montgomery battle in the final game of the series on Thursday night at 7:05 PM CT. The Braves go with right-hander Mitch Atkins (5-1, 2.76) against Biscuits right-hander Marquis Fleming (4-6, 5.00).
