Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners are pleased to announce that outfielder Romeo Cortina has been voted to represent the organization at the 2018 Frontier League All-Star Game on Wednesday, July 11th at CarShield Field in O'Fallon, Missouri.
A second-year Miner, Cortina signed with the club in 2017, batting .258 with four homers and 26 RBIs in 44 games down the stretch. This season, playing nearly every day in left field, he is batting .281 with four homers, six doubles and 17 RBIs in 39 games through July 1st. The Humble, Texas native finished his college career at St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas, batting .374 with eight homers, 55 RBIs and 19 doubles as a redshirt senior to earn First-Team All-Heartland Conference honors.
"We couldn't be happier for Romeo," Miners manager Mike Pinto said. "He worked very hard this offseason to come in ready at a higher level, and it's great to see that hard work rewarded."
As a Rookie-2 this season, Cortina will play for the Rookie squad in the game, as the Frontier League has switched this season from an East vs West Division format to an Experienced vs Rookie classification format. The manager of the East Division team in first place following play on Wednesday, July 4th will manage the Rookie team, while the manager of the first-place team in the West Division after all games on that date are complete will manage the Experienced team. Those managers will also select the final three players to be added to the all-star roster for their respective teams.
Southern Illinois will return to action on the road this week in Traverse City against the Beach Bums, with a three-game series beginning tomorrow night at 6:05 p.m. Kurt Heyer draws the starting assignment for the Miners while Traverse City will pitch right-hander Jordan Desguin in the series opener.
The Southern Illinois Miners are the Frontier League's winningest franchise since debuting in 2007, winning the 2012 Frontier League Championship as well as division titles in 2010, 2014, 2015 and 2016. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in their inaugural season.
