Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds blasted their way to their most lopsided win of the year, coasting past the Lakewood BlueClaws 14-0 on Thursday evening at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
Drew Rom (3-0) registered his first career Quality Start for the Shorebirds (35-10). The Orioles' No. 28 prospect tossing six innings of two-hit shutout ball, walking one and striking out seven. Rom retired 14 batters in a row at one point and has now thrown 21.2 consecutive scoreless innings; he hasn't given up an earned run in his last 25.2 frames.
Kevin Gowdy (0-2) took the loss for the BlueClaws (15-31) after failing to record an out in the first inning and allowing four runs on six straight walks. Jhon Peluffo earns his third save of the year by finishing the final three innings in scoreless one-hit fashion, striking out three.
The Shorebirds didn't have to take their bats off their shoulders to pull ahead in the first. Gowdy walked six straight to begin the frame, the final three by Doran Turchin, Will Robertson, and Seamus Curran with the bases loaded to score runs and put Delmarva ahead 3-0. After a pitching change and with the bases still loaded, Daniel Fajardo bounced into a run-scoring double play, pushing the Shorebirds ahead 4-0.
With one out in the second, Cadyn Grenier spanked a double and Adam Hall drew a walk. After a groundout advanced both runners, Turchin cranked a three-run homer, his fifth of the season, to make it 7-0 Delmarva.
Delmarva piled on with a run each in the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth, Hall smacked an RBI double to left center to make it 8-0, while Fajardo singled and scored on an error in the fifth to get it up to 9-0.
The floodwaters really poured in in the seventh. With two outs, Jean Carlos Encarnacion legged out an infield single to kickstart a rally. After back-to-back walks, Hall plated Encarnacion with an infield single, pushing the Shorebird lead into double digits. Nick Horvath cleared the bases and then some as he blasted a triple to center and then scored when the relay throw to third skipped into the stands, putting Delmarva up 14-0.
The BlueClaws only managed six baserunners in the game on three singles, two walks, and an error.
Hall reached base all five times he came up for the Shoreibrds, going 3-for-3 with a double, two walks, two RBIs, and three runs scored. It was Hall's 18th multi-hit game of the year and his second straight. Grenier scored four times in a 1-for-2 performance with a double and three walks. Horvath drove in three runs and scored twice, while Turchin topped him with four RBIs, finishing 1-for-2 with a homer and two walks.
The shutout is the sixth of the year for Delmarva pitching staff and the fifth that Daniel Fajardo has caught. When Fajardo is catching, Shorebirds pitching boasts an ERA of 1.94.
With their 35th win the Shorebirds have matched their win total from the first half last season, reaching the mark in 45 games as opposed to 67 in 2018.
The Shorebirds go for the series win against the BlueClaws on Friday night. Nick Vespi (2-2, 6.26) takes the ball for Delmarva while Lakewood counters with Ethan Lindow (1-1, 2.17). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with gates opening at 6:00. Friday night is Harry Potter Night at Perdue Stadium, and the first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a Shorebirds Golden Snitch baseball.
