Rohde Returns for Fifth Season

GARY, Ind. - RailCats infielder and fan favorite Mike Rohde signed a deal to return to the club for a fifth season on Friday. The 2008 All-Star and Northern League Rookie of the Year has a .293 batting average during his four seasons with Gary.

In 2011, the left-handed hitter played in all 100 games for the first time in his career and batted .290/.361/.438 and set career highs in with six homers and 63 RBI. He also cracked a career-high 32 doubles, which led the RailCats and was sixth-best in the American Association. A corner infielder, Rohde has played the majority of his games at first base over the last two seasons.

Rohde, 28, was the Northern League Rookie of the Year in 2008, when he was 10th in the league with a .319 batting average and knocked in 55 runs. He also had a career-best .382 on-base percentage that season and made the All-Star team. Rohde was the first RailCat in team history to win Rookie of the Year.

The Brookfield, Wisc. native hit .285 with three home runs and 39 RBI in 91 games in 2010. In 2009, he batted .274 with two homers and 32 RBI. He had a career-best six triples and 14 stolen bases.

Rohde began his pro career with the Schaumburg Flyers in the Northern League in 2007 and hit .318 in 63 contests. He is a lifetime .297 hitter with a .366 on-base percentage.

Rohde played collegiately at the University of Illinois, where he was a Second Team All-Big Ten selection as a sophomore and finished his three years with the Fighting Illini as a .327 hitter. Before transferring to Illinois, Rohde spent two seasons at the University of New Orleans.

Rohde was a star in the college wood bat Northwoods League during his college years, playing four seasons for the Madison Mallards and helping his team to a league championship. After his final Mallards season in 2006, Rohde was inducted into the team's Wall of Fame.

The RailCats will open the 2012 season on May 17, with the Home Opener on Friday, May 25 at 7:10 p.m. against the Wichita Wingnuts at U.S. Steel Yard.
