Medford Rogues News Release
LONGVIEW, WA - Just off the plane and into uniform, Victor Garcia Jr. made a splash in his first game for the Medford Rogues. The Texas Pan-Am freshman first baseman hit two home runs and drove in four in his West Coast League debut to lead the Rogues to a 7-3 win over the Bend Elks. The two teams are now tied for first place in the WCL South with identical 2-2 records.
After going 0-2 in his first two plate appearances, Garcia Jr. hit his first home run since high school over the right field fence in the sixth inning, a solo shot to extend the Rogues' lead to 3-1. In the eighth inning with two on, Garcia Jr. took the WCL lead in home runs as he launched his second home run to put the game away at 7-1. Two late runs by the Elks took the final score to 7-3.
For the Rogues, RHP Brandon Erickson (1-0, Feather River JC) went seven strong innings, scattering four hits with one run while striking out six and walking none. An inning apiece by LHP Matt Loeffler (New Mexico State) and RHP Brandon Kuchta (Cypress JC) finished off the game for the Rogues.
Elks RHP Patrick McGuff (0-1, Morehead State) started for Bend and gave up three runs through six innings to take the loss for the Elks.
The two teams meet again on Tuesday in the second of a four-game set. Expected to start for the Rogues is LHP John Forsythe (Cypress JC), who went 4-1, 1.43 for the Rogues last summer. Bend has not announced their starting pitcher for the game. Game time is 6:35 p.m.
