San Jose SaberCats News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. (July 17, 2007) - San Jose SaberCats' wide receiver James Roe and linebacker/fullback Phil Glover were selected as the Offensive Player and Ironman of the Week following their performances in a 61-49 victory over the Chicago Rush in the American Conference Championship game last Saturday.
Roe (6-1, 197, Norfolk St.) caught 10 passes for 108 yards in the contest and became the 6th player in Arena Football League history to record 100 or more postseason receptions. While Roe did not register a TD catch, eight of his receptions went for first downs and he had six catches that went for 12-or-more yards.
"Our receivers did a great job of stretching the field on Saturday," said head coach and general manager Darren Arbet. "James Roe has been an integral component of this franchise's success and in my mind is one of the best receivers in this league."
Glover (6-30, 272, Utah) earned the Ironman honor for the second straight week of the postseason. He started at "mack" linebacker for San Jose and collected 2.5 tackles, but also lined up as the fullback in certain offensive packages. Glover made an acrobatic TD catch in the back of the endzone with 1:23 left in the first half to extend the SaberCats' lead to 28-7. He also ran the ball once for a two-yard gain.
"Anything I can do to help get this team win a championship," stated Glover. "If I need to be a receiver, an offensive lineman, or a defensive lineman, when my number is called I have to make sure I can step up and do what I need to do."
The SaberCats advanced to ArenaBowl XXI with their win and will face the National Conference champion Columbus Destroyers in New Orleans on Sunday, July 29. Kickoff at New Orleans Arena is set for 12 noon (PT) and the game will be broadcast on ABC (HD).
A premier franchise in the AFL, the San Jose SaberCats have captured two ArenaBowl titles, seven Western Division championships, eight consecutive playoff appearances and own the league's best regular season record this decade.
