Columbus Destroyers News Release
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Columbus Destroyers defensive back Jerald Brown has been named the Arena Football League's ADT Defensive Player of the Week for the Conference Championship round, the AFL and Destroyers announced today.
Brown (5-11, 185, Glenville State) registered five tackles, one pass defended and two interceptions as the Destroyers defeated the Georgia Force, 66-56, on Saturday to win its first-ever National Conference Championship and advance to ArenaBowl XXI. Brown intercepted Georgia QB Chris Griesen on the second play of the game to jumpstart the Destroyers momentum that would carry them throughout the game. Brown's second interception off Griesen in Columbus' end zone would stop the Force's attempt to tie the game and set the record as the longest interception return for touchdown in postseason history at 54 yards. Brown's two interceptions would help Columbus' defense hold Georgia to 21 first-half points and hold off the Force's offense on a late fourth quarter surge to secure the victory.
Brown joins quarterback Matt Nagy and defensive back/wide receiver B.J. Barre as Destroyers' recipients of weekly awards during the 2007 AFL season. Nagy was named AFL Offensive Player of the Week for the Wild Card Round while Barre was named AFL Ironman of the Week for his performance in Week 11.
The Destroyers will face the American Conference champion San Jose SaberCats at ArenaBowl XXI New Orleans on Sunday, July 29. Kickoff at New Orleans Arena is set for 3 p.m. (ET). The game will be broadcast on ABC (HD) with Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic calling the action. The Destroyers Radio Network and flagship station WINK 107.1 FM will air the AFL's title game with the pre-game show beginning at 2:30 p.m. (ET).
