QB Salisbury Named to Al Lucas Hero Team
July 17, 2007 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Grand Rapids Rampage News Release
GRAND RAPIDS - The Arena Football League named Chad Salisbury (Perryopolis, Pa.) to its Al Lucas Hero Team yesterday. The Grand Rapids Rampage quarterback joins seven other AFL players as nominees for the Al Lucas Hero Award, presented annually to the player who makes the most significant contribution to both his community and the game of Arena Football.
Salisbury made a home in West Michigan, moving his family in 2006 after playing the part of a journeyman in the AFL for seven seasons. He immersed himself in the community, serving as a substitute teacher in several West Michigan schools while becoming head coach for Byron Center High School's freshman football team. Salisbury also took charge of the Rampage's Youth Football Program presented by Wendy's, visiting over 2,500 kids in communities as far away as Big Rapids, Mich.
Above all else, Salisbury was a spokesman and a model for the AFL throughout the 2007 season. He encouraged fan participation and education through fan camps such as the U.S. Army Passing Clinic and the Rampage Women's Football Academy. He even personally called Rampage Season Ticket Holders over two days in March to thank them for their continued support of the organization and the league.
The Al Lucas Hero Award was created in honor of the late Los Angeles Avengers lineman Al Lucas, who believed both in giving back to his community and growing the game of Arena Football. Lucas died tragically after suffering an injury during a 2005 game against the New York Dragons.
The award winner will be announced by the AFL today (July 17), and will be presented at the ADT ArenaBowl Awards Gala on Friday, July 27, in New Orleans. ArenaBowl XXI, which pits the Columbus Destroyers against the San Jose SaberCats, will take place in New Orleans on July 29, and will be aired on ABC beginning at 3:00 p.m. EDT.
