San Jose's Roe, Glover And Columbus' Brown Earn Conference Championship Honors
July 17, 2007 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I) News Release
NEW YORK - San Jose SaberCats WR JAMES ROE, Columbus Destroyers DB JERALD BROWN, and SaberCats FB/LB PHIL GLOVER have been named Offensive Player, ADT Defensive Player, and Ironman of the Week, respectively, for the Conference Championship Round of the 2007 AFL playoffs.
OFFENSIVE: Roe (6-1, 197, Norfolk St.) recorded a team-high 10 receptions for 108 yards as the San Jose SaberCats defeated the Chicago Rush, 61-49, on Saturday to capture the American Conference Championship and advance to ArenaBowl XXI. Roe registered eight of the SaberCats 26 first downs stretching the field with six catches of 12-yards-or-more in the process. San Jose scored touchdowns on 10 of its 15 possessions with Roe hauling in one-or-more catches on six of the scoring drives.
ADT DEFENSIVE: Brown (5-11, 185, Glenville St.) registered five tackles, one pass defensed and two interceptions as the Destroyers defeated the Georgia Force, 66-56, on Saturday to win its first-ever National Conference Championship and advance to Arenabowl XXI. Brown intercepted Georgia QB CHRIS GREISEN on the second play of the game to jumpstart the Destroyers momentum that would carry them throughout the game. Brown's second interception off Griesen in Columbus' endzone would stop the Force's attempt to tie the game, and set the record as the longest interception return for touchdown in postseason history at 54 yards. Brown's two interceptions would help Columbus' defense hold Georgia to 21 first-half points, and hold off the Force's offense on a late fourth quarter surge to secure the victory.
IRONMAN: Glover (6-0, 272, Utah) recorded one two-yard touchdown reception and one rush for two yards on offense. On defense, Glover registered two-and-a-half tackles as San Jose's defense held the Rush to 14 first-half points en route to the 61-49 victory. Glover notched a key tackle with DB MARQUIS FLOYD as they prevented Rush WR ROB MAGER from scoring on the SaberCats three-yard line with 30 seconds remaining in the game. San Jose would hold Chicago to only one more touchdown to seal the victory.
Offensive Player of the Week candidates included: Columbus QB Matt Nagy, San Jose QB Mark Grieb and WR Rodney Wright.
