Colorado Eagles News Release
WINDSOR, Colo. - The Colorado Eagles, proud affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche, announced Tuesday that they have re-signed forward Derek Rodwell for the 2016-17 season. The 6-foot-2, 195-pound winger posted four goals and 11 assists in 54 contests with Colorado last season. A 5th round pick of the New Jersey Devils in the 2009 NHL Draft, the Taber, Alberta native has netted 15 goals and 19 assists in 118 total games with Colorado.
"Derek is an explosive, strong forward who creates a lot of energy with his physical play," said Eagles head coach Aaron Schneekloth. "As Derek enters his third season as a professional, we're excited to see him have the opportunity to fully reach his potential as a power forward."
Prior to joining the pro ranks, Rodwell spent the previous four seasons at the University of North Dakota, where he registered 24 points in 123 games. He also helped UND capture WCHA championships in both 2011 and 2012, while being named to the WCHA All-Academic Team in 2012 and 2013.
"I'm really excited to get back in front of the Eagles fans, the passion that they bring to the rink makes it such a great atmosphere to play in," said Rodwell. "The Eagles have an absolutely first-class organization and they have already signed some great players for the season, so I can't wait."
The 26-year old enjoyed a very productive career at the junior level with the Okotoks Oilers of the AJHL, where he posted 101 points and 146 penalty minutes in 158 total contests. During his final season with the Oilers, Rodwell potted 18 goals and added 35 assists in 55 games.
