Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Wilmington, DE - The Wilmington Blue Rocks were in the same spot as Friday night; trailing in the ninth inning.
There was no magic on Saturday night, however, as the Wilmington Blue Rocks (3-5) fell in defeat to the Frederick Keys (4-4) by a 3-2 score at Frawley Stadium with the tying run left on first base.
There was not much of an offensive display from either club as the Keys recorded seven hits and the Blue Rocks had eight base hits.
The Keys made the most of their chances as they meticulously put up a single tally in three separate innings en route to the victory. Trailing after a frame, Frederick knotted the game up in the second inning against Blue Rocks starting pitcher Yordano Ventura. After a leadoff walk to Michael Flacco, a one out double from Matt Sweeney squared up the score.
In the fourth inning, Flacco again was issued a free pass. A hit and run with Kipp Schutz moved Flacco over to third. That was Ventura's last batter of the night as he was replaced by lefty Ryan Dennick. Sweeney was his first man and a sacrifice fly off his bat made it 2-1 in favor of the visitors.
The third run for the Keys came on a fielder's choice from Ronnie Welty with the bases loaded and one out. On Welty's slow ground ball, second baseman Whit Merrified hesitated and made an awkward and short underhand toss to shortstop Alex McClure. McClure got the out at second but made a low throw to first base that Brian Fletcher could not handle, allowing Joe Oliveira to score from third and make the score 3-1.
The Rocks got the scoring started in the first inning. After a leadoff double from Merrifield against Mike Wright, both McClure and Cheslor Cuthbert grounded out to third to bring home the run to give the Blue Crew an early 1-0 lead.
After a split in the first two games, the Blue Rocks will tangle with the Keys one final time in the rubber game of this three-game series as first pitch on Sunday is scheduled for 1:35 p.m. Wilmington right-hander Greg Billo (0-1, 5.40) gets the ball against lefty Rick Zagone (1-0, 3.60). Broadcast coverage begins at 1:05 p.m. as studio host Rob Cunningham brings fans the Rocks Report Pre-game Show, presented by Wawa, on 89.7 WGLS-FM and online at wgls.rowan.edu.
