Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Salem, VA--- The Wilmington Blue Rocks began a seven-game road trip on Thursday night and fell, 9-0, to the Salem Avalanche in front of 4,929 at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium.
Brian Rodaway (4-7) tossed a four-hit, complete-game shutout in his first start of the season against Wilmington. The Lincoln, NE native walked three and struck out six.
Kyle Middleton (6-7) allowed six runs, three earned, on nine hits over 6.1 innings and suffered his fifth straight loss. Middleton, who left with Salem in front 4-0, still has not won since June 1.
Aric Leclair entered the game with two runners on base and walked two, including one with the bases loaded. Todd Self walked to force in a runner from third base to give Salem a 5-0 advantage. The next hitter, Brooks Conrad, drilled a grand slam homerun to cap off the scoring for the night.
Salem sent a total of 11 batters to the plate in the seventh inning and scored seven runs against Middleton and Leclair.
The Blue Rocks and Avalanche continue their three-game series on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Chris Tierney (3-9, 4.35) goes to the hill against Salem's Jimmy Barrett (3-7, 6.35). The Salem Avalanche have won four of their last five games.
Game Notes:
The Rocks are 1-7 in the first eight games at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium in 2003. Wilmington has two games left at Salem for the regular season.
James Shanks collected one hit in four at-bats and extended his hitting streak to a season-high eight in a row.
Justin Cowan went 1-for-3 and has hit safely in six in a row and 12 of his last 14 games.
Conrad's grand slam homerun was the second of the season against Wilmington. Winston-Salem's Mike Morse drilled a grand slam against Barry Armitage at Frawley on June 15.
