Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Wilmington, DE - It was just one of those days at Frawley Stadium. A dreary and wet afternoon saw the Wilmington Blue Rocks and Salem Red Sox complete three-and-a-half innings on Sunday in a constant rainfall. Eventually the precipitation became too much to play through and a 90-minute delay ensued. When the rain would not subside, the umpires had no choice but to cancel the game. Since this was the last meeting between the Rocks and Sox in 2010, the contest will not be made up.
It was actually a break for Wilmington, which trailed the Sox, 5-0, as the delay began. None of the stats will count, but everything below did occur.
The Sox ruined the return of Wilmington starter Tim Melville. The 20-year-old right-hander was making his first start since July 11 after an extended stay on the disabled list. He was greeted by a three-run first inning by Salem.
Four singles gave the Sox an early advantage. Mitch Denning opened the game with a liner back through the box. He then stole second, and went to third on Peter Hissey's broken-bat grounder to second. Denning came home when Oscar Tejeda sent another liner right up the middle. Tejeda moved into scoring position on a wild pitch and was plated by Alex Hassan's single to center. Ronal Bermudez made it a three-run game with his knock into shallow right-center.
Melville settled down in the second and retired the Sox in order. But the third was a different story. The Wentzville, Missouri native yielded three more singles in the frame, as Salem extended its lead to 5-0. Drew Hedman and Ryan Dent each authored one-out hits. With the infield in, Melville induced a grounder to short that kept the runners in place. But after Denning worked a walk to load the bases, Hissey came through with a huge two-run knock.
None of it counts though, as the Rocks received a true gift from Mother Nature.
Wilmington hits the road for a four-game series with the Frederick Keys that begins on Monday at 7 p.m. Right-hander Bryan Paukovits (3-3, 5.28) takes the hill for the Rocks against Frederick's Luis Noel (3-2, 5.76).
