Grand Junction Jackalopes News Release
An offensive explosion.
The Rockies scored 11 runs on 15 hits, including a solid, consistent showing from Nico Popa, who went 4-5 with three RBIs.
"I was just trying to get strikes early in the count and put good swings on them and was able to do that tonight," Popa said.
The 11-5 victory started with an error by Will Buraconak, and it was the small break the GJ Rockies needed in the second inning to get the team on the board.
The bases were loaded when Austin Elder came up to the plate in the second inning and put down a small hit straight back to Buraconak. The Northern Colorado Owlz pitcher threw first base allowing the bases to clear and for the Rockies to take the lead.
The Rockies had another four-run inning in the sixth as they continued to get timely hits and score off of errors that the Owlz made.
Elder had an RBI single that scored Josh Elvir, causing the bases to load and the Owlz to make a pitching change.
The change didn't matter as Popa singled, scoring Alex Nielsen and Joe Johnson, who ended up scoring on a throwing error by the shortstop. Casey Petersen then hit a fly ball to center field, which would be caught, but Popa would score on the play.
Elvir contributed to the Rockies' lead as he homered in the seventh. Then back-to-back doubles in the eighth by Caleb Farmer and Petersen allowed the Rockies to get their 11 runs across the board.
"Anytime you can get production out of everybody, it is great. Hits are contagious, so that is what we were able to do tonight, and everyone swung very well. It was a good team win," Popa said.
The Rockies starter Izzy Fuentes put the Rockies in a solid position as he only gave up the two runs in the second inning but was able to get six and two thirds innings striking out six.
The two teams will play again tomorrow at 6:35 p.m.
