Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Midland scored six runs over the final two innings in an 8-3 victory over Corpus Christi Sunday evening at Whataburger Field before 6,173.
The RockHounds (29-15; 64-50) captured the Texas League series three games to one. Midland owns a five-game lead over the Hooks (24-20; 72-42) in South Division second-half play. Corpus Christi has already clinched a berth in the South Division playoff series by winning the first-half title.
Midland's eighth-inning uprising came vs. Kyle Westwood (7-6). Consecutive one-out singles from Josh Whitaker, Bruce Maxwell, and Wade Kirkland gave the visitors a 3-2 advantage. Maxwell scored on Chad Pinder's infield single behind the second-base bag; Kirkland tallied on a throwing error by shortstop Jio Mier, who attempted to get Colin Walsh (walk) on a behind-the-back flip to second baseman Jack Mayfield.
Hooks right fielder Jon Kemmer belted his 16th home run off Kris Hall in the eighth.
The RockHounds produced three more in the ninth against Vince Velasquez when No. 9 hitter Kirkland homered to left, Anthony Aliotti (double) and Maxwell (walk) aboard.
Hall (3-0) was the winning pitcher for Midland.
Roberto Pena earned an RBI for Corpus Christi the easy way in the second, working a two-out bases-loaded walk off Dillon Overton. A.J. Reed posted a lead-off single to right, Kemmer a one-out single the other direction. Conrad Gregor drew a two-out free pass.
The first three RockHounds then reached against Michael Feliz - Maxwell and Kirkland on consecutive singles - and Jaycob Brugman via a base on balls. Feliz responded by fanning Walsh and Pinder before Matt Olson flew to center. Feliz reached back for a 97 mph fastball to whiff Pinder.
Overton, who threw 80 pitches (47 strikes) over five innings, allowed five hits, three walks, and fanned one.
Feliz went a frame deeper, allowing three hits, three walks, and striking out eight. Fifty-nine of his 99 pitches were strikes.
Feliz has a 20 1/3-inning scoreless streak for the Hooks.
Midland took a 2-1 lead in the seventh with Reymin Guduan on the mound. Whitaker reached on an infield single and moved into scoring position on a throwing error by third baseman Colin Moran. Maxwell picked Whitaker up by doubling to right and later crossed on Brugman's single.
The Hooks leveled immediately, plating an unearned run against Omar Duran. Teoscar Hernandez walked, advanced to the keystone on Moran's single, and home on Reed's single and a dropped ball by Whitaker in left field.
Kirkland, Maxwell, Reed, and Kemmer had three-hit nights.
Pinder has authored a 13-game hitting streak and Kemmer has hit in nine straight.
The Hooks now travel to Arkansas and Northwest Arkansas on a six-game road trip. Corpus Christi returns to Whataburger Field on Tuesday, August 18, for a six-game homestand against the Travelers and Naturals.
