Richmond Roosters News Release
Richmond, Indiana â Richmond lost the first game in a three-game series to Rockford 6-2 on Tuesday night. The RiverHawks scored four runs in the third inning taking an early lead they would not relinquish. For the Roosters, it was the first home game since May 27th, and only the fourth this season. Curt Moenter started for Richmond and prior to the game was second in the league with a 0.47 ERA. He struggled in the third, however, and gave up the four Rockford runs in that inning. The Roosters would not be able to match the scoring of the RiverHawks as Moenter went on to lose his first game of the year.
Gooby Gerlits began the scoring in the third inning by powering a three-run homer over the left-center wall. Jon Chappell contributed another run by getting a RBI single to left field to score Olmo Rosario and give Rockford a 4-0 lead. The RiverHawks got another run in the sixth with a solo shot from Brian Baron to lead off the inning. It was his first of the year and extended the lead to 5-0.
The Roosters finally got the scoring going in the bottom of the sixth when Josh Hollingsworth and Tony Sanguinetti hit back-to-back homers to get a couple of runs back. It was Hollingsworth's seventh of the year and Sanguinetti's fourth. It was also the second time in the season that the two players have hit home runs in consecutive at-bats. Richmond continued to threaten in the inning and even loaded the bases with two outs, but Kevin White struck out to end the scoring in the sixth. Richmond failed to put any more runs across the plate in the next three innings and took the loss.
Gooby Gerlits led off the ninth for Rockford with a triple off the wall in center, and then scored on a stand-up double by Doug Schutt to give the RiverHawks an insurance run and a 6-2 win. Jon Richards started the game for Rockford and got his first win of the season.
The Roosters have two games remaining in the series with Rockford. Matt Schweitzer (1-1, 1.82 ERA) will toe the mound for Richmond and will be facing Derek Roper (3-0, 3.27 ERA). The first pitch is scheduled for 6:35 pm (Indiana time). The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a four player baseball card strip presented by Meineke Car Care Center.
